A small city in the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. Population 53,528 (1975). Located at an altitude of 1,061 meters, it was the administrative center of the region until 1897, when the state capital was moved to Belo Horizonte, 114 km away. Its former name was Vila Rica do Ouro Preto, meaning "town rich in black gold." During Brazil's mining economy in the first half of the 18th century, the Minas region, represented by this city, was the center of the Brazilian economy. During the colonial period, approximately 80% of Brazil's gold production of about 100 tons came from Minas. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
