…The use of corridors in residential buildings was revived in the English Renaissance, and in addition to corridors as connecting passageways, long corridor-type rooms called long galleries were created. They were initially used as martial arts training halls, but later were used primarily as art exhibition rooms (galleries). In the 17th century in England, houses with a complete central corridor were created, such as Coleshill (c. 1650), and in the 18th century, separate corridors and staircases became common in terraced houses, and each room was independent. However, it was not until the 19th century that each room was independent through the use of corridors in continental countries. With the spread of modern architecture, central corridors were sometimes looked down upon as wasted space in the mid-20th century from the perspectives of functionalism and economy, but with the decline of the modern movement, the utility of corridors has been properly evaluated again. …

…住宅における廊下の活用はイギリスのルネサンス建築で復活し，連絡通路としての歩廊のほかに，ロング･ギャラリーlong galleryと呼ぶ長大な歩廊型の室が生まれ，はじめは武術の道場として用いられたが，後にはもっぱら美術品展示室として利用された(ギャラリー)。17世紀のイギリスでは，コールズヒルColeshill(1650ころ)のような完全な中廊下式の住宅が生まれ，18世紀のテラス･ハウスでは，廊下兼階段室の独立が通例のものとなり，各室の独立が確立されていたが，大陸諸国で廊下の利用による各室の独立が達成されたのは，19世紀に入ってからであった。近代建築の普及にともない，機能主義と経済主義の観点から，20世紀中期には一時期，中廊下がむだなスペースとして軽視されることもあったが，近代運動の衰退とともに再び廊下の効用が正当に評価されるようになっている。…
