1925‐80 Soviet author. Born into a family of Red Army officers, his father was purged by Stalin in 1938. He began writing novels upon graduating from the Gorky Literary Institute in 1949, and won the State Prize for "The University Student" (1950). He continued to write many works after that, but from the 1960s onwards he developed themes that explored the crisis and devastation lurking in the daily lives of intellectuals living in Moscow, becoming a representative author of Soviet literature from the 1960s onwards. Works such as "The Exchange" (1969), "Another Life" (1975), "House by the River" (1977), and "The Old Man" (1978) depict the daily lives of city residents in a city where revolution and war are now a thing of the past.
