A general term for the Scorpionidae order of the Arthropoda class. There are approximately 600 extant species. Most are 4-6cm long, but the largest, the Copper Scorpion (distributed in West Africa), can reach 18cm. They are characterized by large palps with scissors-like tips and a poisonous stinger at the rear end of their abdomen. Some are highly venomous, but the poison is generally not as strong as commonly feared. They are nocturnal and feed mainly on insects. The dance that males and females perform when mating is well known. They are ovoviviparous. The female carries the newly hatched young on her back and protects them. Many species are found in the tropics and subtropics, with the Yaeyama scorpion and the Spotted scorpion found in Okinawa and Taiwan, and the Spotted scorpion found in the Ogasawara Islands.
