A general term for mammals of the family Emballonuridae in the order Chiroptera. It is so named because the tip of its tail protrudes above the interfemoral membrane. It is an insectivorous bat that is found in a wide range, including the New World from Mexico to South America, southern Asia, Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and the tropics and subtropics of the Palau Islands. There are about 50 species, but none are found in Japan. Forearm length 3-8 cm, head and body length 3.5-10 cm, tail 0.6-3 cm. Body color varies from solid color to spotted or striped. 翼手目サシオコウモリ科Emballonuridaeの哺乳類の総称。尾端が腿間膜の上面に突出しているのでこの名がある。虫食性コウモリで,メキシコから南アメリカまでの新世界およびアジア南部,アフリカ,マダガスカル,オーストラリアおよびパラオ諸島の熱帯と亜熱帯に分布し,分布域が広い。その種数は約50種に達するが,日本には見られない。前腕長3~8cm,頭胴長3.5~10cm,尾は0.6~3cm。体色は単色のものと斑点または縞模様のあるものがある。
