He became an apprentice to Takeshima Kozaemon I, and later to Ikushima Shingoro. He excelled in both his work and his tanzen skills, and became the head of the Edo Ichimura-za Theatre. In February 1704, while performing in the same theatre in the play "Watamashi Jyuudan," he stabbed Ichikawa Danjūrō I to death after an argument in the dressing room, and died in prison on April 3, 1705.
