〘 noun 〙 A hall whose internal staircase is structured like a spiral ladder. The Sanso-do Hall of the Gohyaku Rakan-ji Temple in Edo Honjo Gotsume was famous. A surviving example is the Sazaedo Hall on Imoriyama in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Turban shell. 〘名〙 内部の階段が螺旋梯子(らせんばしご)に似た構造になっている堂。江戸本所五つ目にあった五百羅漢寺の三匝堂(さんそうどう)が有名であった。現存するものに福島県会津若松市、飯盛山のさざえ堂がある。さざえ。さざいどう。さざい。※雑俳・柳多留‐一五一（1838‐40）「親に似た迄は数える栄螺堂」
