In two sets A and B, for each element a in A there corresponds an element b = Φ(a) in B, and when _a1 and _a2 are different, the corresponding _b1 = Φ( _a1 ) and _b2 = Φ( _a2 ) are also different, and any element b in B can be written in the form Φ(a), then sets A and B are said to have a one-to-one correspondence (by the mapping Φ), and Φ is called a one-to-one correspondence between A and B. For example, if the natural number n corresponds to the even number 2n, then the set of all natural numbers and the set of all even numbers correspond one-to-one. The cardinality of two sets that have a one-to-one correspondence is equal.

二つの集合A，BにおいてAの各元aに対しBの元b＝Φ（a）が対応し，a₁，a₂が異なるとき対応するb₁＝Φ（a₁），b₂＝Φ（a₂）も異なり，Bの任意の元bはΦ（a）の形に書けるとき，集合A，Bは（写像Φにより）１対１に対応するといい，ΦをA，Bの間の１対１対応という。たとえば自然数nに偶数２nを対応させると，これにより自然数全体の集合と偶数全体の集合が１対１に対応する。１対１に対応する二集合の濃度は等しい。
