Japanese: 赤間硯 - あかますずり

A regional brand of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Chugoku region.
They are produced in Ube City and Shimonoseki City. There is a record that Akama inkstones were donated to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine at the beginning of the Kamakura period, and during the time of the Mori clan, they were a special product of the Choshu domain and were given as gifts for daimyo's alternate attendance, making them extremely valuable items. Akama stone is a hard material with intricate and beautiful patterns, and is sticky so it is easy to carve, making it an excellent choice for an inkstone. After the mined raw stones are sorted, most of the processes are done by hand. In December 1976, it was designated a traditional craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (currently the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).

中国地方、山口県の地域ブランド。
宇部市・下関市で製作されている。赤間硯は、鎌倉時代の初めに鶴岡八幡宮に奉納されたという記録があり、毛利氏の時代には長州藩の特産品として参勤交代の贈り物などとされ、大変貴重な品であった。赤間石は材質が硬く緻密で美しい紋様があり、しかも粘りがあるため細工しやすく、硯石として優れた条件を持っている。採掘した原石は選別した後、工程のほとんどが手作業でおこなわれる。1976(昭和51)年12月、通商産業大臣(現・経済産業大臣)によって国の伝統的工芸品に指定。
