The family Ardeidae can be broadly divided into herons and night herons. The former comprises the diurnal genera Ardea (illustration), Egretta (illustration) (including the Intermediate Egret (illustration) and Great Egret (illustration)), Bubulcus (illustration), Ardeola (illustration), Butorides (illustration), Agamia (illustration), and Syrigma (illustration), nocturnal night herons including Nycticorax (illustration), Nyctanassa (illustration), Gorsachius (illustration), and Cochlearius ( illustration), as well as the primitive Tigrisoma genus that inhabits tropical jungles, making up the majority of the family Ardeidae. The latter consists of the genera Ixobrychus and Botaurus , which are adapted to life in reed beds.
