In Japan, this evergreen small tree (illustration) is found in the coastal forests of the Ryukyu Islands and is well known as a poisonous plant of the Apocynaceae family. It grows to a height of 4-10m and has a white milky sap all over. The leaves are gathered at the ends of the twigs, alternate, obovate-oblong or obovate-lanceolate, 6-37cm long, hairless, abruptly tapered at the tip, narrow at the base, and have many lateral veins. The cymes are terminal. The corolla is high-tray shaped, white, about 5cm in diameter, with a red throat, and five obovate-sickle-shaped lobes, 2-3cm long.
