Summer fire and winter fan

Japanese: 夏炉冬扇 - かろとうせん
Summer fire and winter fan
A metaphor for something out of time, useless, or useless.

[Example] Unlike spectacles that don't care about the season, Canal he The entertainment industry naturally dislikes the summer fire and the winter fan. Applause Yanya It is completely in the heat of summer, and in winter we sit and eat. [Izumi Kyoka *Giketsu Koketsu|1894]

[Example] It cannot be denied that literature is, in a sense, like the "summer hearth and winter fan" that Basho spoke of. [Nakano Yoshio * Solitary Spirit | 1941]

[Example] If there is literature that is expected to have a practical effect, it is propaganda literature, regardless of whether it has a political color or not, and regardless of whether the author intended to do so. Art is always established when it recognizes the useless, the fire in summer and the fan in winter. [Shigehiko Toyama * Individuality of the Japanese Language | 1976]

[Explanation] Using a brazier in the hot summer and bringing out a fan in the cold winter are out of season and silly. "Summer fireplace, winter fan" refers to such useless things.
The source of this phrase is the Han Dynasty text: Theory Ron Equivalence like this "
At the time, ordinary people thought that you couldn't get ahead in life if you did things like "keep a fireplace warm in summer and a fan in winter." However, the author of "Lunheng" argues the opposite.
"The brazier in summer dries out the moisture, and the fan in winter makes the fire. Whether you can get ahead or not depends on whether you get along with your lord." In other words, if you find a good lord, even a "summer fireplace and winter fan" can be useful.
However, today it still refers to something that is useless. The sense of the common man at the time seems to suit us better.
Speaking of "Summer hearth, winter fan," Matsuo Basho's writing is famous. Basho considered his haiku to be useless, just like "Summer hearth, winter fan." The example sentences "The spirit of solitude" and "The individuality of the Japanese language" are based on this.
