Ailey, Alvin
Born January 5, 1931 in Rogers, Texas
[Died] December 1, 1989, New York. An American black dancer and choreographer. He studied under L. Horton, M. Graham, and H. Holm. In 1958, he formed his own ballet company, and choreographed works using blues and gospel, such as "Blues Suite" (1958) and "Revelation" (60). He also choreographed a wide range of works from classical to jazz, such as S. Barber's "Hermit Song" (62) and D. Ellington's "Echo of the Blue" (64). These works, which harmonize artistry and popularity and are full of innovative images and energy, won him overwhelming popularity. He performed at the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 1976. He also performed in Japan many times.
