Louis Saillant

Japanese: サイヤン - さいやん(英語表記)Louis Saillant
Louis Saillant

French labour activist. Born in Vallance, Drôme, in the south of France, he was involved in trade union activities as a furniture maker. He served as secretary of the regional federation of furniture makers, then secretary of the national federation, and in 1938 became an executive member of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT). During World War II, he played an important role in the resistance against the Germans, and in 1944 was elected chairman of the National Council of the Resistance (CNR), a federation of resistance organisations. After the war, he became secretary-general of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) when it was founded in 1945, but came into conflict with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions after it separated from it as the Cold War progressed. He was a labour movement leader loyal to the line of the French Communist Party, and was awarded the Lenin International Peace Prize in 1958.
