Martonne's aridity index I is expressed as I = P / ( T + 10), where P is the annual precipitation and T is the sum of the monthly mean temperatures for months above 0°C divided by 12. It corresponds well to natural landscapes and land use, with I below 5 being desert, I between 5 and 10 being steppe, and I above 10 being possible for dry agriculture, but artificial irrigation is necessary up to I = 20.
