A national art museum in Florence, Italy. Its collection includes sculptures and crafts from the Middle Ages and later, mainly from the Tuscan region. Construction of the building began in 1255 as the residence of the Capitano del Popolo (Captain of the Foreigners), and in 1261 it became the residence of the Podestà (Major Magistrate), and in 1574 it became the seat of the Bargello (Chief of Police for Foreigners), from which the museum takes its name. Renovations began in 1857 to display sculptures and crafts, excluding paintings, that had previously been housed in the Uffizi Gallery and elsewhere, and it opened as a national art museum in 1865.
