A type of viral disease in insects. It mainly infects and causes disease in the larvae of lepidopteran insects such as silkworms. The virus is a regular icosahedron with a diameter of 50 to 70 nm, with protrusions at each vertex, and its nucleic acid is double-stranded RNA. Normally, virus particles are embedded randomly in protein inclusion bodies called polyhedra with a diameter of 3 to 6 μm. There are various types of polyhedra, including regular icosahedrons, regular hexahedrons, and irregular shapes, and these shapes are consistent depending on the type or strain of the virus. When an insect ingests food contaminated with polyhedra, the polyhedra dissolve in the digestive tract, releasing the virus particles, which infect the midgut tissue.
