From the mid-Muromachi period through the Edo period, these were envoy ships sent from Japan to Korea every year for the purpose of friendship and trade. They were also called toshi-bune (year-old ships). At first, there were ships carrying envoys carrying diplomatic documents from the shogunate, powerful shugo daimyo, and large temples, but in reality they were merely merchant ships. In the Kakitsu Treaty, the So clan of Tsushima promised to send 50 special ships a year, and after 1512 (Eisho 9), 25 ships were allowed (Jinshin Agreement). During the Edo period, the number was limited to just 20 ships belonging to the So clan of Tsushima.
