Gangtok - Gangtok (English spelling)

The capital of Sikkim state in northeastern India. It is located at the southern foot of the Himalayas. It has a population of 29,162 (2001). The town is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,770 meters, and overlooks Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters), the third highest peak in the world. Compared to the scorching heat of India, it is cooler, with an average temperature of less than 15°C even in summer. The annual precipitation is more than 1,200 mm, with the rainy season being from April to September in summer, and the winter being rather dry with monthly precipitation of less than 50 mm. The trading of grains and fruits is thriving, and the bazaar is crowded with Tibetans, Nepalese, and Lepchas. There is a royal palace (Maharaja's palace) and a Tibetan Buddhist (Lamaism) temple.

インド北東部、シッキム州の州都。ヒマラヤ山脈の南麓(なんろく)に位置する。人口2万9162（2001）。標高1770メートルの高原上に開けた町で、世界第3位の高峰カンチェンジュンガ山（8586メートル）を望む。灼熱(しゃくねつ)のインドに比べ夏でも平均15℃以下で冷涼である。年降水量は1200ミリメートル以上で、夏の4～9月が雨期、冬は月降水量が50ミリメートル以下で乾燥ぎみである。穀物や果実の取引が盛んで、バザールはチベット人、ネパール人、レプチャ人などでにぎわう。王宮（マハラジャ宮殿）、チベット仏教（ラマ教）寺院などがある。
