The capital of Sikkim state in northeastern India. It is located at the southern foot of the Himalayas. It has a population of 29,162 (2001). The town is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,770 meters, and overlooks Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters), the third highest peak in the world. Compared to the scorching heat of India, it is cooler, with an average temperature of less than 15°C even in summer. The annual precipitation is more than 1,200 mm, with the rainy season being from April to September in summer, and the winter being rather dry with monthly precipitation of less than 50 mm. The trading of grains and fruits is thriving, and the bazaar is crowded with Tibetans, Nepalese, and Lepchas. There is a royal palace (Maharaja's palace) and a Tibetan Buddhist (Lamaism) temple.
