… According to Schaeffer, traditional music uses abstract sounds (musical tones) to achieve concrete expression, while musique concrète tries to achieve abstract expression using concrete sounds. He held the first musique concrète concert in Paris in 1950, founded a musique concrète research group within the national radio in 1951, published a paper titled “Studies in musique concrète” in 1952, and presented the opera “Orpheus 53” in collaboration with Pierre Henry (1927-) at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in 1953, rapidly bringing this new field to worldwide recognition. Other of his early works include “Etude for a railway” (1948) and “Variations on a Mexican flute” (1949). …
