Letters from an American Farmer

…He was born to a minor nobleman in Normandy, France, and traveled to Canada as a young man to participate in the colonial struggle between England and France. He then moved to the New York Colony, where he obtained citizenship in 1765, married an American woman, and began a peaceful and idyllic agricultural life on a farm he purchased. Based on his experiences and knowledge, he wrote Letters from an American Farmer (1782), in which he posed the famous question, “Americans, who are these new men?” and asserted the image of Americans as “new men” living in a new environment with new ideals and social systems, becoming the starting point for subsequent writings on America. In 1778, in the midst of the chaos of the American Revolution, he supported the royalists and returned to Europe, and his “American dream” was shattered for a time. However, after independence, he returned to America as French consul and worked hard to develop friendly relations between the United States and France. …
