…Born in Nagasaki, he graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1882. He joined the Geological Survey of Japan and went to Germany in 1886 to study paleontology under Karl Alfred von Zittel (1839-1904) at the University of Munich. He returned to Japan in 1889 and became a professor at the University of Tokyo. His paper on Mesozoic plant fossils in the Hokuriku region, which he researched while studying abroad, was the first paper by a Japanese to describe fossils. …
