Alyssum - Alyssum

It is a perennial plant of the Brassicaceae family (APG classification: Brassicaceae), but is usually treated as an annual plant because it is weak to strong heat and cold. Its Japanese name is Niwanazuna or Nioi-nazuna. It was previously classified as a member of the Alyssum genus, so it is called Alyssum. It is native to the coastal areas from the Mediterranean to Western Asia. It is a very dwarf plant, with a height of 10 to 15 cm, and is highly branched, naturally forming a hemisphere. It has flower spikes at the top of the branches, and produces small four-petaled flowers in white, purple, and pink, all of which have a sweet fragrance. Another species called Alyssum is Alyssum montanum L., which produces yellow flowers in alpine habitats. Commonly cultivated varieties include Carpet of Snow (white), Royal Carpet (purple), and Rosy O'Ddie (pink). They are often used for edging flower beds and flower beds, but they also work well in pots and rock gardens. Seeds are sown in pots or boxes from mid-September to early October in warmer areas, and from March to April in cooler areas. Soon after germination, the seedlings are transplanted with 5cm spacing between each plant, and after 30 to 40 days, they are potted into No. 4 pots. They are raised in a warm place during the winter, and then transplanted the following spring.

アブラナ科（APG分類：アブラナ科）の多年草であるが、強い暑さと寒さに弱いので、普通は一年草として扱われる。和名をニワナズナ、ニオイナズナという。以前はAlyssum属とされていたので、アリッサムとよばれる。地中海から西アジアにかけての海岸地帯原産。草丈は10～15センチメートルの極矮(ごくわい)性で、分枝性に富み自然に半球状になる。枝の上部に花穂をつけ、白、紫、桃色の4弁の小花を密につける。いずれも甘い芳香がある。アリッサムとよばれるものには、このほかにAlyssum montanum L.という高山性の黄色花をつける種類もある。一般に栽培される品種にカーペット・オブ・スノー（白色）、ロイヤル・カーペット（紫色）、ロージー・オディ（桃色）などがある。多くは模様花壇や花壇の縁取り材料に用いるが、鉢植えやロック・ガーデンにもよい。暖地では9月中旬～10月上旬、寒地では3～4月に鉢か箱に種を播(ま)く。発芽後まもなく株間5センチメートルに移植し、30～40日後に4号鉢に鉢取りし、冬期間は暖かい所で育苗し、翌春に定植する。
