Chenonceaux (English spelling)

A small village with a population of 358 (1982) located on the Cher River, a tributary of the Loire River, in the Indre-et-Loire department in western France. It is located 12 km southeast of Amboise. It is famous for its castle, which is in a transitional style from Gothic to Romanesque, and has a gallery spanning the Cher River. The castle was built in 1515, but in 1535 it was seized by King Francis I of France, who gave it to his son Henri II, who gave it to his favorite Diane de Poitiers. After Henri II's death, his wife Catherine de Medici seized it. The castle changed hands several times and was altered, but was restored in the 19th century. It is now one of the centers of tourist areas along the Loire River.
