… The Iberian Peninsula was once almost completely conquered by Muslims, but the Reconquista continued for about 800 years, and finally Granada, the last stronghold of the Islamic kingdom, fell in 1492. At the same time, the Spanish language (Andalusian dialect), mainly from the south, was carried to the Americas by the "conquistadors," and today it is used as the official language in 19 countries in Central and South America (including Puerto Rico), overwhelming the indigenous languages, which are said to number more than 100.

The Latin dialects in the northern and central parts of the peninsula, which gave rise to Spanish, had already undergone further dialectal differentiation.
