The equestrian statues carved into the rock faces of Madara in the 8th century by the Bulgars, who invaded after the Slavs, suggest contact with Sassanid Persia in their homeland, and the magnificent architectural techniques using well-ordered cut stones, such as those found in the ruins of the palace at Pliska, are examples of Armenian architecture influenced by the Sassanid Empire. After the conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy in 864, many basilica-style churches were built, which was already uncommon at the time, but the stonework techniques were rapidly lost, and Armenian architecture began to show contemporaneity with Byzantine architecture after the centralized church of Preslav (10th century), thought to have been the court chapel of Simeon I. …
