A marine fish of the family Sixgillidae in the order Sixgill sharks (illustration). Its English name is Sixgill shark, derived from the number of gill slits. Four species of the family Sixgillidae are known to exist in the waters off Japan: the sixgill shark, the white sixgill shark, the brown edible shark, and the yellow sixgill shark. The sixgill shark has six pairs of gill slits, which distinguishes it from the other two, which have seven. There are two species in the Sixgill shark genus, and both are known to exist in the waters off Japan. They have been recorded in almost all tropical to temperate waters of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
