Shichoge - Shichoge

Japanese: シチョウゲ - しちょうげ

A deciduous small shrub of the Rubiaceae family (illustration). The flowers are pale purple and resemble cloves, so it is called Shichoge (purple clove flower). It is also called Iwahagi (rock bush clover) because its purple flowers resemble those of the Fabaceae bush clover and it grows on rocks. It is used as an ornamental bonsai or garden tree. It branches well and grows to a height of 15-70cm. The leaf blade is broadly lanceolate, pointed at both ends, entire, and 1.5-3.5cm long. The interleaf stipules are needle-like with sharp tips. The flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the branches or at the ends of short branches that emerge from the leaf axils.

アカネ科の落葉性小低木（イラスト）。花が淡紫色で，その形がチョウジ(丁字)に似るのでシチョウゲ(紫丁花)という。別名イワハギ(岩萩)は紫色の花をマメ科のハギに見立て，岩の上に生えることによる。観賞のため盆栽や庭木とする。よく分枝し，高さ15～70cmとなる。葉身は広い披針形，両端がとがり，全縁，長さ1.5～3.5cm。葉間托葉は先がとがって針状となる。花は，枝の先端または葉腋（ようえき）から出た短い枝の先に，多数集まってつく。
