A deciduous small shrub of the Rubiaceae family (illustration). The flowers are pale purple and resemble cloves, so it is called Shichoge (purple clove flower). It is also called Iwahagi (rock bush clover) because its purple flowers resemble those of the Fabaceae bush clover and it grows on rocks. It is used as an ornamental bonsai or garden tree. It branches well and grows to a height of 15-70cm. The leaf blade is broadly lanceolate, pointed at both ends, entire, and 1.5-3.5cm long. The interleaf stipules are needle-like with sharp tips. The flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the branches or at the ends of short branches that emerge from the leaf axils. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
