Golding, William (Gerald)
Born: September 19, 1911, near Newquay, Cornwall
[Died] June 19, 1993. Falmouth, Cornwall. British novelist. Known for his works that use mythological and allegorical techniques to examine the human condition. After graduating from Oxford University, he became a teacher and joined the Royal Navy in 1940. His debut work, Lord of the Fries (1954), is a parody of Ballantine's adventure novel for boys, Coral Island (1858), and explores the extreme conditions of the nuclear age through the story of boys stranded on a deserted island. It is considered one of the most important novels since World War II. He subsequently published such controversial works as The Inheritors (1955), which looked at humanity through the eyes of the Neanderthals, Pincher Martin (56), Free Fall (59), The Spire (64), The Pyramid (67), and Rites of Passage (80). He also wrote the play The Brass Butterfly (1958). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983.
