Japanese Literary Patriotic Association
A national policy literary group formed during World War II. 1942-1945. Founded under the direction of the Information Bureau, Division 3, 5th Department, with the support of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association and the Cabinet Information Bureau. It was part of a total mobilization system aimed at thoroughly publicizing and spreading national policies, and cooperating in their implementation. Under the leadership of Chairman Tokutomi Soho and the first Secretary-General Kume Masao, the group had approximately 4,000 members divided into eight divisions, including novels and dramatic literature. Its main activities included holding a Greater East Asia Writers' Conference, selecting the "National Motto" (Critical Essay Division) and the "Patriotic One Hundred Poems" (Tanka Division), compiling the "Greater East Asia War Poetry and Tanka Anthology," writing novels and poems by Tsuji, a festival to honor classical writers, and holding lectures on the Literary Patriotic Movement. Its journal took over from the "Nihon Gakugei Shimbun" and was renamed "Bungaku Patriotic." It ceased to exist when Japan was defeated in August 1945.
