The central city of south-central Alberta, Canada. Population 888,866 (2001). Located 80 km east of the Rocky Mountain foothills, at an altitude of 1,060 m, it has a semi-arid climate, and the hot, dry Chinook winds that blow down from the Rocky Mountains in winter have a great influence on the surrounding vegetation. It was originally a fort for the North-West Mounted Police in 1875. The surrounding area is pastureland and wheat fields, and it is known as a trading center for grains and livestock in this vast agricultural region. It also supplied goods to the nearby mines and coalfields, and was a key point for railways and roads. However, when natural gas was discovered in the nearby Turner Valley in 1914 and oil in 1937, and when oil fields were discovered further north, it rapidly developed as an oil city. Oil and gas companies are concentrated there, and skyscrapers stand in the city center, making it the fastest-growing city in Canada. With the development of the petroleum industry, there are many factories for refining oil, flour milling, food processing, machinery manufacturing, chemical industry, etc. The livestock exchange is still important today, and the Stampede rodeo held in July is famous. As the gateway to the Canadian Rockies, it attracts many tourists from overseas. In 1988, the Winter Olympics were held in the area.

カナダ、アルバータ州中南部の中心都市。人口88万8866（2001）。ロッキー山麓(さんろく)の東方80キロメートルにあり、標高1060メートル、半乾燥気候で、冬季にロッキー山脈から吹き下ろす高温で乾燥したシヌック風は周辺の植生に多くの影響を与えている。1875年北西騎馬警官隊の要塞(ようさい)地となったのが起源。周辺は放牧地または小麦畑で、この広大な農牧地域の穀物、家畜の取引地として知られる。また、近郊鉱山、炭田への物資供給地で、鉄道、自動車道の要衝でもあったが、近郊のターナー・バレーで1914年に天然ガス、1937年に石油が発見され、さらに北部で油田が発見されるに及んで、石油都市として急速な発展をした。石油、ガス会社が集中し、市中心部には高層ビルが林立し、カナダ一の人口急増都市となった。石油工業の発展とともに精油、製粉、食品加工、機械製造、化学工業などの工場が多数ある。家畜取引所は現在も重要で、7月に開催されるロデオ大会のスタンピードは有名で、カナディアン・ロッキーへの玄関口にあたり、海外からの観光客も多い。1988年には冬季オリンピックが開催された。
