A bird of the family Rallidae (illustration) in the order Grui. Total length is about 23 cm. The back from the back of the head down is olive brown, while the forehead, face, neck, and most of the underside are deep reddish purple. The throat is white. There are fine white horizontal stripes on the sides of the lower abdomen. It is widely distributed from the temperate to tropical regions of Asia, and those that breed in the north migrate south in winter. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird and breeds in rice fields and wetlands throughout the country, but is a resident bird in the Ryukyu Islands. It does not live in flocks but lives alone in pairs, and males mainly sing in the early morning, slowly at first and then faster and faster, singing in a unique voice: "Kyo-kyo-kyo-kyo-kyo-kyo-kyo-kyo...".
