Shomyo Falls

Japanese: 称名滝 - しょうみょうだき

This waterfall falls on the Shomyo River, which flows through Tateyama Town, Nakaniikawa County, in eastern Toyama Prefecture. It is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The Shomyo River flows out from just below Mt. Oyama in Mt. Tateyama, cutting the welded tuff plateau of Midagahara into a V shape before falling 350 meters. The waterfall splits into four tiers, the lowest of which reaches a height of 126 meters. In rainy weather, it falls as a huge column of water, but it is most beautiful when the water volume is 2 to 3 tons per second. The best way to view the waterfall is from the old Hachirozaka hiking trail. In 1982 (Showa 57), the Shomyo Prefectural Road was renovated and the Shomyo Promenade was completed.

富山県東部、中新川(なかにいかわ)郡立山町(たてやままち)を流れる称名川にかかる滝。国指定名勝・天然記念物。立山の雄山(おやま)直下から流れ出た称名川は弥陀ヶ原(みだがはら)の溶結凝灰岩の台地をV字状に侵食して350メートル落下する。滝は4段に分かれ、いちばん下の滝は126メートルに達する。雨天には一大水柱となって落下するが、水量が毎秒2～3トンのときがもっとも美しい。観瀑(かんばく)には八郎坂の旧登山道がもっともよい。1982年（昭和57）に県道称名道路が改修され、称名遊歩道も完成した。
