Akugenta

Japanese:
Akugenta

A historical drama written by Matsui Shoyo (Shoo). Four scenes. It was first performed at the Meijiza Theater in September 1899 (Meiji 32) by Ichikawa Sadanji I and others. It was published in the Literary Club in November of the same year. It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name that Matsui Shoyo wrote and serialized in the Hochi Shimbun in 1895, at the request of Sadanji. Based on the conflict between the Genpei and Taira clans during the Heiji Rebellion, it depicts the confrontation between Minamoto no Yoshihira (Akugenta) and Taira no Shigemori, and how Akugenta is captured at Ishiyama-dera Temple, but his life is saved by the intercession of Princess Hanasaki, and he is brought to Rokuhara. Matsuyo wrote the play with the intention of linking writers with the pear-eared world, but was sabotaged by the theater's playwright. It became a monumental play as it was the first historical drama written by an outside literary scholar to be taken up in the world of Kabuki.
