A Turkic language. Also called Oirotic. It has about 45,000 speakers in the Altai Republic in Russia. It is now called Altaic. Sometimes it also includes Tereng and Teleut. It consists of two quite different dialects, one in the north and one in the south, and the written language written in Russian characters is based on the southern dialect. Its position within the Turkic languages is classified as the northeastern dialect (also called the Altaic dialect or Siberian dialect) along with Khakass, Shor, Tuvan, Karagas, and Sarig-Uighur, but there are further theories. Incidentally, Oirotic is a Mongolian language and is a different language from Oirotic.
