Beppe Fenoglio

Italian novelist. Born in Alba, a small town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, Fenoglio spent most of his life there. Like C. Pavese, he is a writer from the hilly region of the Langhe, but unlike Pavese, he took up arms and fought in the resistance at the end of World War II. The central part of Fenoglio's novels is the peasants cultivating vineyards on the hillsides and the partisan war that unfolded there. His representative works include Twenty-Three Days in Alba (1952), Destruction (1954), the posthumously published One Day in the Fire (1963), A Personal Problem (1965), and Johnny the Partisan (1968).

イタリアの小説家。北イタリア，ピエモンテ地方の小都アルバに生まれ，生涯の大部分をそこに送った。C.パベーゼと並び，丘陵地帯ランゲの作家であるが，パベーゼと異なり第2次世界大戦末期のレジスタンスの際武器をとって戦闘に加わった。丘の斜面でブドウ畑を耕す農民たちとそこに展開されたパルチザン戦争がフェノリオの小説の中心部分を占めている。代表作は《アルバ市の二十三日間》(1952)，《壊滅》(1954)，死後出版の《戦火の一日》(1963)，《個人的な問題》(1965)，《パルチザン･ジョニー》(1968)など。
