They are hunter-gatherers who live in the coastal areas and small archipelago from the southern coast of Chile to the west of Tierra del Fuego, located at the southern tip of South America. They live in isolation from the outside world in a harsh natural environment with cold and heavy rainfall. They have almost no contact with other societies other than ships passing by. Their population continued to decline in the 20th century. They live in simple tents made of tree branches and animal skins or bark, and travel by canoe in search of food. They do not form permanent settlements, and do not form any social groups other than the family. They mainly collect shellfish and berries, and also hunt marine animals such as seals. They do not use fishing gear such as fishhooks or nets, and rarely catch fish. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
