Died August 22, 1584. Polish poet from Lublin. The greatest Polish poet before A. Mickiewicz. Together with M. Rey, he built the Golden Age of Polish literature. He studied in Padua and Paris, and became familiar with Italian and French literature. He began writing Latin elegies and epigrams during his stay in Italy, and after returning to Poland, while working at the imperial court, he wrote Satyr (1564) and the long poem Szachy (66). He also wrote Odprawa posłów greckich (78), a translation of the Psalms of David (79), and Treny (80), freeing poetry from didacticism and making it more universal. His poems, written in clear language, have precise divisions, stable rhythm, and groundbreaking meaning.
