Ashi Tozan

Japanese: 蘆東山 - あしとうざん

1696-1776 A Confucian scholar in the mid-Edo period.
Born on November 23, 1606. Studied under Tanabe Seisai in Sendai and Miyake Shosai in Kyoto. In 1712, he became a Confucian scholar in the Sendai domain and studied under Muro Kyuso in Edo. Later, after pleading guilty, he completed the 18 volumes of "Mukeiroku" during his 20-year imprisonment. Died on June 2, 1772. Age 81. Born in Shibutami, Mutsu (Iwate Prefecture). His real surname was Iwabuchi, former surnames were Ashino and Ashihara. His given name was Tokurin. His pen name was Sesuke. Common names were Koshichiro and Tomin. Alternative names included Shibutami. His works include "Toyama Bunshi."

元禄(げんろく)9年11月23日生まれ。仙台で田辺整斎に,京都で三宅尚斎らにまなぶ。享保(きょうほう)6年仙台藩の儒官となり,江戸で室鳩巣(むろ-きゅうそう)に師事。のち罪をえて20年余におよぶ幽閉中に「無刑録」18巻を完成させた。安永5年6月2日死去。81歳。陸奥(むつ)渋民(しぶたみ)(岩手県)出身。本姓は岩淵,前姓は蘆野,蘆原。名は徳林。字(あざな)は世輔。通称は幸七郎,東民など。別号に渋民など。著作に「東山文詩」など。
