Novelist. Born in Kagawa Prefecture. Dropped out of the English department at Waseda University. Early on, he showed an interest in tanka poetry. He began to receive recognition as a novelist with "A Certain Newlywed" (later renamed "Newlywed") in 1923 (Taisho 12). In 1924, he founded the magazine "Bungei Jidai" with Kawabata Yasunari and Yokomitsu Riichi. He published "Embroidered Vegetables" (1924) and "Frozen Dance Hall" (1925), and established the modernist era as a flag-bearer of the Shinkankakuha movement. He was also an active critic, but gradually shifted to a lyrical style, and published "Routaki Hana" (1933), "Ai Ren Mugen" (1935-36), and then his representative work "Ten no Yugao" (Heavenly Evening Glories) in 1938 (Showa 13). During the war, he took a nationalist stance. After the war, his works include "The Garden of Lost Paradise" (1950), "Season of Tragedy" (1952), and "A Night of Search for Beauty" (1956-59).
