An annual plant of the Asteraceae family (illustration) that is widely distributed from Africa to the tropics and subtropics of Asia. It is somewhat common in the Ryukyu Islands, but is only seen in the summer in the warmer regions of Honshu west of Shizuoka Prefecture, Shikoku, and Kyushu. In tropical regions, the plant body before flowering is used as a vegetable. The height is about 40 cm. The stem is thin and often branches at the base, with several stalks tilting upward. The lower leaves have winged stalks and round leaf blades. The upper leaves are egg-lanceolate in shape and grow at the base, embracing the stem. Both the upper and lower leaves have projections on the edges, and are powdery green along with the stem. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
