Erinna - Erinna (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. A Greek female poet from the mid-4th century BC. Born on the small island of Telos near Rhodes, she is said to have died at the early age of 19. Fragments of a song lamenting the death of her childhood friend Baucis remain. The song is filled with warm memories and deep sadness as it describes the friendship between the two girls as young girls, and Baucis' marriage and death. The poem is titled "The Spindle" and is said to have been around 300 lines long. The expression of such personal feelings of mourning in epic meter was extremely unusual for the time, and was a precursor to the Hellenistic poets of the following generation.

生没年不詳。紀元前4世紀中ごろのギリシアの女流詩人。ロードス島に近い小島テロス島に生まれ、19歳で夭折(ようせつ)したとされる。幼友達のバウキスの死を悲しむ歌の断片が残されている。少女時代の2人の友情、バウキスの結婚と死などが、温かい思い出と同時に深い悲しみを込めて歌われている。この詩は『紡錘』という題名で、300行ほどの長さであったらしい。叙事詩の韻律で、このような個人的な哀悼の感情を表現したものは当時としてはきわめて特異で、次代のヘレニズム期の詩人たちの先駆となっている。
