Tukārām (English spelling)

A religious poet from Maharashtra, India. An ardent Vaishnavite, he left behind many hymns dedicated to the god Vishnu in the vernacular Marathi language. His poems sing of the joy of bhakti (faith and devotion) to the one God in a simple yet passionate way, and were widely sung and loved by the masses. He lived his whole life as a modest shopkeeper, devoted to serving God, and was revered by people as the embodiment of the bhakti faith.

インドのマハーラーシュトラの宗教詩人。熱烈なビシュヌ教徒で、ビシュヌ神に捧(ささ)げる数多くの讃歌(さんか)を俗語マラーティー語で残す。彼の詩は、唯一神に対するバクティbhakti（誠信・信愛）の喜びを、素朴にしかも情熱的に歌い上げたもので、広く民衆に愛唱され、親しまれた。終生ささやかな一店主として暮らし、神への奉仕に生き続けた彼は、バクティ信仰の体現者としても人々に敬慕された。
