Dicotyledonous, polypetalous plants. Herbaceous, shrub or small tree. Leaves are simple with palmate veins. Flowers are bisexual and actinosymmetrical. There are five petals that are folded into a whorl when in bud. There are many stamens, and the filaments are fused to form a tube that surrounds the pistil. The fruit is a capsule. There are about 1,000 species in 75 genera, distributed from temperate to tropical zones. In Japan, species of the Hibiscus, Polytrichum, and Scutellaria grow wild, as well as useful plants such as okra, hibiscus, and cotton, and ornamental plants such as Rose of Sharon and Rose of Sharon.

In the APG classification, Malvaceae, Tilia, Bombacaceae, and Sterculiaceae are collectively referred to as Malvaceae. There are about 230 genera and 4,300 species distributed around the world from temperate to tropical regions. In Japan, species of Hibiscus, Polytrichum, Scutellaria, Tilia, Sterculia, Celastrus, and Scutellaria grow naturally.

Japanese:

双子葉植物、離弁花類。草本、低木または小高木。葉は単葉で掌状脈をもつ。花は両性で放射相称。花弁は5枚で、つぼみのとき渦巻状に畳んでいる。雄しべは多数、花糸は合着して筒をつくり雌しべを取り巻く。果実は蒴果(さくか)。75属1000種ほどあり、温帯から熱帯にかけて分布する。日本にはフヨウ属、ボンテンカ属、キンゴジカ属などが野生するほか、オクラ、トロロアオイ、ワタなどの有用植物や、ムクゲ、ブッソウゲなどの観賞植物がある。

 APG分類では、アオイ科、シナノキ科、パンヤ科、アオギリ科をまとめてアオイ科としている。世界の温帯から熱帯にかけて230属4300種ほどが分布する。日本には、フヨウ属、ボンテンカ属、キンゴジカ属、シナノキ属、アオギリ属、ノジアオイ属、サキシマスオウ属などが自生する。
