Dicotyledonous, polypetalous plants. Herbaceous, shrub or small tree. Leaves are simple with palmate veins. Flowers are bisexual and actinosymmetrical. There are five petals that are folded into a whorl when in bud. There are many stamens, and the filaments are fused to form a tube that surrounds the pistil. The fruit is a capsule. There are about 1,000 species in 75 genera, distributed from temperate to tropical zones. In Japan, species of the Hibiscus, Polytrichum, and Scutellaria grow wild, as well as useful plants such as okra, hibiscus, and cotton, and ornamental plants such as Rose of Sharon and Rose of Sharon.
