Located in the southeastern end of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia in the South Pacific, it consists of four volcanic islands, Mangareva, Taravai, Aukena, and Akamaru, in a large barrier reef, and Temoe Atoll, about 4 km southeast of them. It is also called Mangareva Islands. The total land area is 29 km2 , and the population is 566 (1971). The inhabitants are Polynesian, and practice subsistence agriculture by growing breadfruit, bananas, taro, etc. The population was once more than 2,000, but in 1834, Father Labarre came to the island and forced the islanders to work to build a huge stone cathedral, which caused many islanders to die due to the hard labor, and the population suddenly dropped.
