Circle of fifths

A musical term. A diagram showing the process of starting from a certain note and picking up successive notes by fifths. In the case of 12-tone equal temperament, if you start from a certain note and pick up successive notes by ascending or descending by perfect fifths, you will return to the starting note in 12 tries, and all the notes in the octave will appear. If this is represented by a double circle, the sharp (♯) tonality is shown clockwise, and the flat (♭) tonality is shown counterclockwise. The outer circle represents the major keys, and the inner circle represents the parallel minor keys of each major key. Also, if you pick up four notes that intersect at right angles, you will get a diminished seventh chord.

音楽用語。ある音を出発点として，5度ずつ順次，音をとっていく過程を図に表わしたもの。 12音平均律の場合は，ある音から始めて完全5度ずつ上行，あるいは下行して音を順次拾っていくと，12回で出発の音に戻り，オクターブ内のすべての音が出現する。これを二重の円で表わすと，右回りで嬰記号系 (♯) の調性が，左回りで変記号系 (♭) の調性が示され，外円は長調を，内円にはおのおのの長調の平行短調が表わされる。また直角に交わる4つの音を拾うと減7の和音が得られる。
