Palace/Teahouse - Goten Ochaya

Japanese: 御殿･御茶屋 - ごてんおちゃや

From the end of the Sengoku period through the Edo period, this refers to the palaces and villas built within the castles of the shoguns and daimyo, including Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, or for their transportation and lodging. Originally, the term "goten" referred to the Emperor's Seiryoden, and later came to include the palaces of aristocrats, daimyo, and shrines and temples. The structure of the palaces in each era was centered on the sleeping hall in ancient times, the main hall in the Middle Ages, and the shoin in the early modern period. On the other hand, ochaya began as a teahouse where daimyo and others in the Sengoku period could rest and perform tea ceremonies while traveling or hunting within their territories, and in the Edo period they were also used as places of rest for daimyo when they were making alternate attendance trips to Edo.

戦国時代末期から江戸時代にかけて，織田信長･豊臣秀吉，徳川家康以下の各将軍や諸大名の城郭内，あるいは彼らの交通休泊に供するために設けられた殿舎，別邸をいう。御殿とは元来，天皇の清涼殿などをさし，後には貴族や大名･社寺の殿舎をふくめていうようになったが，各時代の殿舎構成は，古代は寝殿，中世は主殿，近世は書院を中核としていた。一方，御茶屋は戦国大名などが領内を巡歴，遊猟する途次，休憩して茶の湯を興行する茶亭にはじまり，江戸時代には大名の参勤交代時の休泊所としても利用された。
