Peter Schreier

German tenor. Born in Meissen. He was taught by conductor Rudolf Mauersberger (1889-1971) at the Dresden Kreuzkirche Choir, and served as assistant conductor after puberty. After studying vocal music, he made his opera debut in 1959 as a prisoner in Beethoven's Fidelio, and from 1961 he began to perform in opera, mainly Mozart's works. He appeared at the Berlin State Opera in 1963 and the Vienna State Opera in 1966, and in 1967 he appeared at the Salzburg Festival and the Metropolitan Opera in Mozart's The Magic Flute, which made him famous in the West. He has since performed all over the world, and has been highly praised for his beautiful lyric tenor voice, elegant and intelligent expression, and rich musicality, especially for his works by Mozart. He also showed excellent interpretations of songs and religious music, and since the 1970s he has also been active as a conductor of religious music and other genres. He first came to Japan in 1974. He retired from the opera stage in 2000, but continued to work as a concert singer and conductor for several years after that.

ドイツのテノール歌手。マイセン生まれ。ドレスデン聖十字架教会聖歌隊で指揮者マウエルスベルガーRudolf Mauersberger(1889―1971)の指導を受け、変声期以後は副指揮者を務めた。声楽の研鑽(けんさん)を重ね、1959年ベートーベンの『フィデリオ』の囚人役でオペラに初登場、1961年からはモーツァルト作品を中心にオペラで本格的に活躍。1963年ベルリン国立歌劇場、1966年にはウィーン国立歌劇場に出演、また1967年にザルツブルク音楽祭とメトロポリタン歌劇場のモーツァルト『魔笛』に出演して、西側でも一躍有名になった。以後世界各地で活躍、リリック・テノールの美声と端正で知的な表現、豊かな音楽性により、とくにモーツァルトの作品で高い評価を獲得した。また歌曲や宗教音楽にも優れた解釈を示し、1970年代以降は宗教音楽などの指揮者としても活躍した。1974年(昭和49)初来日。2000年にオペラの舞台からは離れたが、その後数年間はコンサート歌手、指揮者としての活動を続けた。
