A perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Liliaceae). The stem stands upright, 10-40 cm tall, and is sparsely covered with stiff hairs. The leaves are dark green, oblanceolate, and somewhat clasp the stem at the base. From September to October, 1-3 flower stalks about 5 mm long and densely covered with brown hairs appear from the leaf axils, and 5-7 yellow flowers bloom upward at the tip. It is endemic to Miyazaki Prefecture, but has been widely cultivated since ancient times.

ユリ科（APG分類：ユリ科）の多年草。茎は高さ10～40センチメートルで直立し、硬い毛をまばらにつける。葉は深緑色、倒披針(とうひしん)形で、基部は多少茎を抱く。9～10月、葉腋(ようえき)から褐色毛を密につけた5ミリメートルほどの花柄を1～3本出し、先端に5～7個の黄色花を上向きに開く。宮崎県の固有種であるが、古くから広く栽培されている。
