In German it is called gerippter Manchester, and in French it is called corde du roi, meaning "king's ridges." Also called corduroy, it is a type of weft cotton velvet with ridges running vertically. After the wool weft threads are woven into a plain or twill weave, they are cut vertically with a knife to make the fibers even. It is generally dyed plain, but recently colorful patterns have also been seen. In Japan, production began in the Fukude region of Shizuoka Prefecture in the late Meiji period and has gradually become more popular. Because the fabric is thick and durable, it is used for practical clothing such as children's clothes, work clothes, and trousers.
